Lanai, also known as the Pineapple Isle or the Secluded Isle, is the sixth largest island in the Hawaiian island chain. With only 140 square miles of land, Lanai is the 42nd largest island in the nation and is separated from Molokai by the Kalohi Channel and from Maui by the Auau Channel. Although pineapple farming and production was once the largest economic driver on the island, tourism has since claimed the top spot, much like most other islands in Hawaii. Many of the Hawaii houses for sale on Lanai are owned by part-time residents who spend winter months in Hawaii and summer months on the mainland or abroad. The Four Seasons Resorts brand operates the two large resort hotels on the island. The world renown Manele Bay Golf Course is also a popular attraction for avid golfers. While there are paved roads between the airport, resorts, and major housing areas, most tourist attractions can be reached only via dirt roads. Garden of the Gods, Shipwreck Beach, and The Stables are the most popular places for people to go. Lanai is so remote that jet airplanes can’t land. The only commercial air service is via small propeller planes that fly scheduled services to Honolulu and Kahului.
